Aviation News for Aspiring Pilots: October 2026 Roundup

Here is what happened in Indian aviation between mid-August and early October 2026 that matters if you are a student or parent planning a pilot career, and what each item means in practice. Every item links to its source. Dates are as reported.

1. Upcoming DGCA exam sessions (Oct–Dec 2026)

What: The Regular Exam 03 session was held 22–26 September. DGCA's 2026 programme lists OLOD Session 7 on 28–30 October, OLOD Session 8 on 18–20 November and Regular Exam 04 on 15–19 December (DGCA Programme of Examinations 2026). DGCA marks the dates as tentative.

What it means for you: application windows close well before exam dates. Check the Pariksha notice board now if you are aiming for December. Our DGCA exams guide explains the papers.

2. A new FTO in Andhra Pradesh, and more approvals in the pipeline

What (26 Sep 2026): Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu inaugurated an FTO at Kurnool airport, described as Andhra Pradesh's first. He said approvals had been granted for 11 FTOs across the country (The Hindu, 26 Sep 2026). That follows the 6 August announcement of Letters of Intent for 11 new FTOs at seven AAI airports, expected to add about 750 cadet seats a year (MoCA release via Aviation World).

Note: the August release said 41 FTOs operate from 63 bases, while the September report quotes the minister as saying "around 36".

What it means for you: more training capacity may mean more choice over time. A Letter of Intent is not the same as a fully operational school, though. Check a school's current DGCA approval and its place in DGCA's FTO ranking (PIB, 24 Apr 2026) before enrolling.

3. Training aircraft accident in Kanpur: AAIB preliminary report

What: On 27 August 2026, a Tecnam P2006T training aircraft crashed near Ganga Barrage, Kanpur, during a training flight. The instructor and trainee pilot on board both died (PIB, 27 Aug 2026). The AAIB's preliminary report (28 September 2026) did not establish a cause. It found the operator had no records or SOP for monitoring flight data, and recommended that DGCA ensure all FTOs follow flight-data-monitoring requirements (Aviation Today, 29 Sep 2026).

What it means for you: our thoughts are with the families. When you choose a school, ask how flight data is monitored, how maintenance is recorded and how emergency training is handled.

4. CBI case involving a DGCA official and an FTO director

What (reported 5 Oct 2026): The CBI arrested a DGCA deputy director (airworthiness) in Chennai and a director of a Salem-based FTO in an alleged bribery case linked to airworthiness certification (Times of India, 5 Oct 2026; Indian Express). These are allegations under investigation.

What it means for you: never pay anyone to "speed up" an exam, medical or licence. Use official portals and official fees only, and keep receipts.

5. Regional airline places a large turboprop order

What (3 Sep 2026): Regional carrier FLY91 announced a firm order for 40 ATR 72-600 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled from 2027 to 2032 (ATR press release, 3 Sep 2026).

What it means for you: fleet growth is one signal of future pilot demand, including on turboprops. Deliveries take years, though, and hiring depends on many factors. No order guarantees jobs.

6. Airline hiring notices

What (20 Sep 2026): Air India Group advertised pilot roles for Air India Express (type-rated A320/B737 first officers and captains) and instructor and other roles at its Cadet Pilot School in Amravati (Indian Aviation News, 20 Sep 2026).

What it means for you: many airline openings target licensed, type-rated pilots. Students should watch cadet programme windows and official careers pages. See Cadet programmes vs self-sponsored CPL.

7. New DGCA rules for gyroplane pilot training

What (29 Sep 2026): DGCA issued CAR Section 7, Series B, Part XXI, which sets out the ground and flying training syllabus for a gyroplane pilot licence. The ministry called it an initial step towards introducing gyroplanes in India (New Indian Express, 29 Sep 2026).

What it means for you: a niche area for now (joyrides, aerial work). It does not change the airline CPL route.

Quick reminder: RTR(A) is now with DGCA

DGCA took over RTR examinations and issuance from 1 December 2025. WPC-issued certificates were to be accepted only until 15 July 2026 (notification summary). If you hold an older WPC RTR, check current DGCA guidance.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next DGCA exam in 2026?

DGCA's 2026 programme lists OLOD sessions on 28–30 October and 18–20 November, and a Regular session on 15–19 December. Dates are tentative, so check the Pariksha notice board.

Are new flying schools opening in India?

The government announced Letters of Intent for 11 new FTOs in August 2026, and a new FTO opened at Kurnool in September 2026. Check each school's DGCA approval before enrolling.

Is pilot training safe in India?

Flying training is regulated by DGCA, and accidents are investigated by AAIB. Ask schools about their safety management, maintenance and flight-data monitoring, and look at DGCA's FTO ranking.

Are Indian airlines hiring pilots in 2026?

Airlines post openings on their official careers pages from time to time, often for type-rated pilots. Hiring depends on airline needs, so no training route guarantees a job.
